A collection of Danish contemporary art

Horsens Art Museum has an extensive collection of Danish contemporary art, which has been the main focus area of the museum since 1984. The aim is to collect many works by relatively few artists – rather than the opposite. Therefore, Horsens Art Museum has the biggest collection of paintings, drawings and graphic works by the Danish painter Michael Kvium.

The museum also holds significant collections of works by the artists Christian Lemmerz, Erik A. Frandsen, Nina Sten-Knudsen and Lars Nørgård, who – along with Michael Kvium – were part of the Danish ‘Wild’ painting of the 1980es.
Also the artist Bjørn Nørgaard has a significant position in the collection of Horsens Art Museum. He is the artist behind the monumental art piece ‘The Human Wall’, which is located in front of the main entrance of the museum.

Besides, Horsens Art Museum holds a collection of paintings from the Danish ‘Golden Age’ in the 19th Century, a collection of Danish Modernist works from the 1940es-1960es, a collection of international comtemporary art and a collection of paintings, drawings and graphic works by the local artist Mogens Zieler (1905-1983).

Finally, the museum holds a collection of younger Danish artists, eg. Martin Erik Andersen, Tal R., Cathrine Raben Davidsen, Peter Host Henckel and Signe Guttormsen.
